Camerano cheese has been famous for centuries and already in the lifetime of San Millán, in the words of the poet Gonzalo de Berceo in the 13th century, its value was well-known:
"Some lands give wine, others give money,
Some give grain, others rams,
They bring iron and steel from Alava,
They give cheeses in offerings throughout the Cameros"
